“Ah squeezed shut mah eyes and let the colors come.
The night holds out a dark lantern and springs its shutter open
so that in the pitch of mah blindness, behind mah lids,
mah scotoma is blasted into a battle sphere of wild meteors,
blood-blown moons, suns and molten planets…”
Nick Cave – The Ass Saw The Angel
The following are a collection of drawings exploring my ongoing interest with the concept of ‘flat.’
Though I have placed these under the heading of ‘two dimensional,’
I also like to imagine each of them as objects in their own right.
In simple terms, they are pieces of paper used as a base upon which I have drawn.
Or perhaps, on a slightly deeper level,
they could be conceived as a conglomeration of fibres,
interlaced and compressed into specific shapes
and then further manipulated with the weight of my hand, ink and lead or other such matter.
Put simply, the essence of my ideas to date are of such further inquiry,
arguing that:
‘Defining something as ‘flat’ is subject for discussion
if we were to consider the options available to perceive the given plain.’
